Environmental Management

Minimising our carbon footprint

Our commitment to minimising our environmental impact informs every part of our business and means we proactively seek new ways to improve our sustainability performance.

Our present focus is on more accurate reporting of our environmental performance in order to set new targets for year-on-year improvements.

As a Chartered Environmentalist, our managing director Mark Beard plays a leading role in driving our sustainability agenda. Environmental champions at each office also contribute ideas and head up new initiatives with the support of senior management.

Since 2007, Beard has held the ISO 14001 accreditation for its Environmental Management System.

Our sustainability commitment runs throughout the company and its supply chain.

Environmentally-friendly design

The design of a project has the biggest single impact on its environmental performance. Through our early involvement in projects, we help clients create future-proof buildings which are more energy-efficient and more sustainable. We support the use of sustainability standards such as BREEAM and have extensive experience of delivering schemes which meet national standards for environmental performance.

Sustainable materials and minimising waste

Our experience of using sustainable materials means we can often propose solutions which are more environmentally-friendly – and cheaper. This expertise saw the company selected by WRAP to help develop a waste-minimisation tool for other contractors to use when planning and purchasing materials.

As part of our waste reduction strategy, we report on all waste taken from site including analysis of how much is recycled and how much sent to landfill.

Cutting our carbon footprint

Energy use on all our sites is monitored as part of our carbon footprint reduction programme.

We also carefully manage the impact of all our sites on the environment and the local community and are committed to protecting and enhancing the biodiversity of the places where we work. All major projects are registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

How we work

At Beard we recognise that our activities have the potential to impact on the environment. We are committed in minimising this impact throughout all of our operations by communicating our environmental policies and strategy to employees, supply chain and other stakeholders, and to raise awareness amongst these groups of their own environmental responsibilities and requirement to commit to environmental improvements.

Beard complies fully and, where possible, exceed standards set in relevant UK, EU and international regulatory requirements and agreements by setting rigorous environmental objectives & targets.  We reduce waste created and, where possible,  reuse and recycle before responsible disposal of waste materials.  Working closely with our supply chain partners we are currently diverting in excess of 90% of waste produced on site from going to landfill.

Beard is ISO 14001 accredited and all our environmental policies and procedures are audited annually by external auditors to ensure our Environmental Management Systems meet the robust standards required.
