‘Bake off’ star opens new community and arts centre in Chippenham built by Beard

TV personality, comedian and joint host of the popular BBC One show The Great British Bake Off, Mel Giedroyc, joined Beard’s Swindon director Marc Bayley and members of the public and Chippenham Town Council to officially open Neeld Hall, a newly refurbished Grade II-listed community and arts centre.

Our Beard Swindon team worked with the Council and Quattro Design Architects on the design and build project to renovate the exciting new centre in the heart of Chippenham which will stage events including shows, concerts and community activities.

The scheme included works to the Town Hall to create a new customer service and reception area and the construction of a new bar space. The hall has been completely redecorated and the existing wooden floor of the main building has been sanded and sealed. Our team installed new retractable tiered seating and updated the existing glass and main entrance doors and replaced them with a glass infill panel and automated doors. Other works included the installation of an air-conditioning unit to ensure that the main hall can be used at full capacity throughout the year.

Built in 1850, The Neeld Hall has always been an integral part of the Chippenham community having originally been constructed as an extension to the Town Hall. It was first used to house the local Cheese Market and the Corn Exchange before going on to serve as a military ward to nurse wounded soldiers during World War I.

“It’s brilliant to see this fantastic new community facility open and receiving such enthusiastic support from the local community and of course, Mel,” said Marc Bayley, Beard Swindon director. “It’s been a privilege to work with the Council and our design partners to deliver this project and we are confident that the refurbished centre steeped so deeply in Chippenham’s history will go on to provide an excellent and versatile place for locals to gather to enjoy the wide range of arts, entertainment and social events that Chippenham has to offer.”
