We work to support our local communities and make a positive contribution to the areas in which we operate. It is essential that we are a good neighbour in these communities and help them to thrive and be successful, as we know our business can only be vibrant if those communities are vibrant too.
Beard’s 125th year fundraising pledge
As part of our celebrations marking our 125 years in business we have made a pledge to raise £125,000 for charity. This target has been split between the four offices, with each office having the freedom to select their own charities to support.
The fundraising efforts will be split into thirds with one third coming from the Beard Charitable Foundation, one third from Beard itself and the final third coming from staff fundraising efforts.
We are hoping that many of our customers, suppliers and subcontractors will support us in our endeavours and intend to publish regular updates about the events we are carrying out and the amount we have reached in our fundraising efforts.
Each office has chosen their own charities and will come up with their own programme of events to support these. However, fundraising can be undertaken for any charity and this will go towards the overall total. The chosen charities are as follows:
Swindon office charities
Brighter Futures Radiotherapy Unit Charity no: 1050892 In May 2015 Brighter Futures Radiotherapy embarked on a £2.9million appeal in order to bring cancer care closer to those living in Wiltshire. So far they have raised £1,375,788. The money raised will equip a new Radiotherapy Centre, to be built in Swindon on the site at Great Western Hospital.
DASH – Discovering Autistic Spectrum Happiness Charity no: 1115852 DASH is an independent local charity whose mission is to improve the quality of life of adults of working age with Asperger’s and other high functioning Autistic Spectrum Conditions living in Swindon.
Dash’s primary aims are to:
• Raise awareness of Asperger’s;
• Promote and enhance access to assessment and diagnosis, post diagnosis support, welfare and care, housing, education and employment;
• Research, promote and help to deliver a local model of support and services.

Guildford office charities
Shooting Starts Hospice Charity no: 1042495 Shooting Star Chase Hospice is a leading children’s hospice caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. The Hospice supports families from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.
SATRO Charity no: 1040572 SATRO is an educational charity and social enterprise which has been working in Surrey and the South East for over 30 years, and provides real-life experience of all aspects of the working world, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through a diverse and challenging range of programmes. There is a well-documented skills shortage within the construction sector, and we have decided to support SATRO to help them continue their programme of activities with young people, providing an invaluable link between education and industry.
BURPS Charity No: 1143667 BURPS is made up of a group of parents and relatives that have had an ill or premature baby on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Their aim is to support the families of the babies on the Unit with advice and information, or simply to offer someone to talk to that understands the difficult situation in which they find themselves.
Oxford office charity
Sobell House Charity No: 1118646. Founded in 1976, Sobell House was one of the earliest NHS hospices to be established, following in the footsteps of Dame Cicely Saunders, considered by many to be the founder of the modern hospice movement in UK. Since then, they have provided specialist palliative care to patients and their families at home, in the Oxford hospitals, and in our purpose-built hospice on the Churchill Hospital site. They are part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust and closely linked to the University of Oxford.
Bristol office charities
Brace Charity Number 297965: Brace raise funds and support dementia research, When it comes to spending the money you help us raise, they don’t do the research themselves. They award grants to university-based researchers in South West England and South Wales. They might be laboratory scientists or clinicians and others engaged in clinical research, where patients and volunteers are also involved.
Their aims are:
- provide the means by which medical science comes to understand what causes dementia in its various forms
- achieve earlier diagnosis of dementia, thereby giving new treatments and knowledge of prevention more time to make a difference
- find new and more powerful treatments
The Jessie May Trust, Charity number 1086048: Jessie May is a Children’s Hospice at Home service, caring for local terminally ill children. The work throughout Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Wiltshire, Bath & North East Somerset providing vital respite care, emotional support, end of life care and bereavement support, alongside family events that help create treasured memories.
Children with Cancer UK: They fund essential research into the causes, prevention and treatment of childhood cancer. They fund welfare projects to provide better care for children and their families. They raise awareness to protect children and improve the lives of young cancer patients.
