Great Things Start with Great People

Career Development Programmes

Beard is now a company of over 300 people, who work from four regional offices and on around 70 construction sites across southern England. As the company grows, maintaining our people-based strategy becomes more of a challenge, but our strong Beard culture - based on our values of friendly, efficient and committed provides us with a way forward.

To maintain common standards across the business we're drawing together the best practice learning and development from across the business, to share with everyone. This is the purpose of the Learning Hub, coordinating existing and new initiatives to benefit both the employees and the business.

Trainee Programme

Every year we take on trainees in each office with a programme for development, combining office-based, site and college learning. Trainees gain NVQ 2 and 3 in the relevant craft, or ONC and HNC if office-based. Trainees enter into an agreement to complete a three or four year programme, dependent on role. Office trainees spend time in estimating, surveying and project management before specialising in the role that fits best.

On completion of your trainee programme you move into a group of employees called "supported young people", as such you will continue to have a support network and will take part in a group developmental session each year covering a specific topic.

Areas covered will include:

  • Coaching/mentoring
  • Expectation exchange
  • Giving feedback as part of performance management
  • Open conversation
  • Access to a range of learning, whether internal from colleagues or more structured from an external provider
  • Opportunity to join rolling programme of stretching development workshops

We want our trainees of today to be the managers and leaders of tomorrow. By committing to you from the start there is every opportunity to help you succeed if that is what you want.

Graduate Trainee Programme

If you are a university student looking for an industrial placement, or have studied a construction-related degree and are looking for a placement after graduation we may be able to provide a year-out placement or a job after you graduate.

Leadership Development Programme

Our Leadership Development programme is intended to equip people for leadership positions within the business in the immediate and mid-term future, ensuring that the business can continue to grow and succeed whilst recognising and promoting talent from within. This creates opportunities in all areas, and at all levels within the business.

Coaching and Mentoring

Several Beard employees have obtained a coaching qualification and we also have access to external coaches and mentors. This forms part of the graduate training and leadership development programmes, however, people often have a need for coaching or mentoring at some stage in their careers and Beard intend to make this a central part of our learning and development.
