Royal Surrey County Hospital, New ICU Department

Guildford

New build two-storey extension to the intensive care unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Project

The new purpose built extension provides 12 additional bed spaces, four isolation rooms, a family and visitor's area and specialist medical facilities. The new facility has also been equipped with the latest life-saving technology funded by the £1.4 million We Care for Intensive Care fundraising appeal, launched by the hospital's charitable fund.

The ICU will treat more than 1,000 patients annually. It will also provide the additional accommodation space and specialist medical facilities to support the needs of a growing number of critically ill patients.

Although we were apprehensive about the disruption to our existing ICU, Beard has ensured that it's business as usual with their construction procedures and good communication with the hospital.

Part of the scheme involved transforming an unused courtyard into a storage space located on Level B of the hospital near to the ICU. Work on Level A of the new extension included façade brickwork and blockwork shell, new glazed windows, external doors and a small amount of power and lighting.

Consideration of the current occupants of the ICU was crucial and our project team took all necessary measures to minimise the impact that the construction work might have on them.

Challenges

The new unit was linked to the existing ICU so it was vital that the clinical staff were able to deliver their high quality care to patients without any interruptions.

Working within a live hospital environment.

There was restricted access for deliveries.

Solutions

Best practice was adopted to minimise noise and subsequent impact on adjacent hospital occupants. Our project team co-ordinated works with the hospital throughout the project to minimise problems with the restricted access and deliveries.

We kept noisy works to a minimum, used dust suppression tools, used banksmen to minimise the time lorry drivers were on site and ensured the programme was completed quickly.

We added not just the other phases to this project but there will also be other projects for Beard to do in the future!

Royal Surrey County Hospital is an important and valued local client for Beard and our Guildford project team continues to undertake construction works for the hospital.
