A project designed to modernise the University of the West of England’s campuses under a framework agreement.

Project

Beard has built, extended and refurbished works as part of the university’s plans to modernise its learning environment and improve facilities for its 30,000 students.

The schemes include the refurbishment of four lecture theatres, the formation of a new communal area along with the refurbishment of the existing facilities. The project team also carried out the remodelling of the fourth floor to form a new animation studio and the refurbishment of two laboratory suites on different floors.

Challenges

  • Working in a live environment
  • Retaining access to cash points
  • Moving heavy materials

Solutions

To ensure project completion before the start of term and minimal disruption to the working college, our project team implemented proficient programming and phased the works in consultation with the university and staff. The construction of temporary walkways through the middle of the site to maintain access to cash points was carefully planned and monitored. A specially constructed gantry and hoist platform to get the plant to a fourth-storey room earned Beard a commendation for ‘exemplary safety management’ by the university. Additionally, all the workforce were trained in awareness of handling asbestos.

“We are really pleased to have Beard working for us.”
