A two storey extension providing a new ICT Suite, office and classrooms plus alterations to the entrance and hall.

Project

The new facilities will enable Haydonleigh to provide an extra 140 places increasing the school’s capacity to 630 pupils.

Beard has refurbished and extended the original school building’s administrative offices, ICT facilities and hall and added a multi-function room with stage which links with the new complex. The new building provides 15 classrooms, a staff room and two multi-use creative spaces. Beard has also provided a new playground, a much-needed space to accommodate the additional pupils. The younger children can now enjoy a soft play area and exercise on the newly provided facilities.

Challenges

  • Working in an occupied building
  • Delivering the new classrooms in time for term
  • Minimising disruption

Solutions

Early intervention with our supply chain to make sure all subcontractors were aware of the occupied building before works started so the relevant risks were assessed.

Traffic and deliveries were managed around class times and pick up and drop off times.

Keeping the client involved on a daily basis meant any issues could be dealt with and problems solved quickly.

“Working with Beards made a difficult and prolonged period of change and disruption for the school a manageable feat. Beards staff were always polite and informative albeit that both us and them were sometimes stuck between the Local Authority decision makers. Jamie and his staff were sympathetic to our need to remain fully operational and worked closely with us to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Frances Billinge,  Haydonleigh School Headteacher
