Design and build of a single storey classroom extension

Project

This project involved the design and build of a single storey block within an existing school to provide new nursery accommodation.

The project handed over 4 weeks early and was awarded as part of The Gloucestershire County Council Construction Framework that Beard secured a place on.

Works included a main teaching block, toilets and a covered outside play area. It was also possible to reuse some of their paving blocks.

Challenges

  • Working in a live school environment
  • Utilising existing services
  • Tight site

Solutions

In order to make space for the new nursery, the school had to sacrifice some of their car park, so we managed parking for the staff and access for parents at drop off and collection time. Communication and collaboration with the school was paramount so we did not disturb their day to day activities, this was particularly salient when cranes were on site and concrete was being poured.

We ran the services from their existing plant room over Easter, so the school was empty and we did not disturb them.

The site was very tight, with no storage as the building took up the entire footprint of the site. Just In Time deliveries were implemented in order to overcome the lack of storage.

“A well executed and managed project delivered to a high quality 4 weeks early…very well done to all concerned.”
