The design and construction of an outstanding new Pre-Prep School to provide a vibrant and nurturing environment in which children can learn, explore and discover.

Project

The project entailed the design and construction of a new two storey Pre-Pre School building and associated external works, along with a package of enabling works to the adjacent sports clubs, existing swimming pool, to enhance its offering to the school as well as to the wider community.

The expansion provides:

  • Enrichment of the curriculum for the youngest children through the flexible use of space
  • Additional space for growth, development and changing needs
  • Easier accessibility to school facilities for the younger children as well as a greater offering to the general community
  • A flexible, space, provided within a secure environment
  • Enhancement to the adjacent sports club facilities

Challenges and Solutions

  • Working with the school and the design team through the early stages of the project we appraised the design, offering up a series of cost saving solutions which allowed the scheme to proceed within budget, without sacrificing space or quality of build
  • Access to the site, via a long winding single carriageway, was shared with the school, its pupils and visitors. Managing this through regular meetings and a dedicated banksman allowed unhindered, safe access at all times
  • Due to the location of the site there was significant environmental sensitivity particularly regarding badgers and a protected species of bat. Working with an Ecologist we rehomed the badgers and managed the landscaping works so as not to disturb the adjacent bat cave. We also developed a scheme of external lighting which provided a safe secure environment for people using the car park, whilst not distracting from the bat flight path along the site boundary
  • Engaging with a customer with a general age of between two and seven provided a number of challenges, which the team enthusiastically rose to, through inventive activities, such as engaging the children in issues such as Health and Safety and appropriately times site visits
  • Our flexible approach also allowed a number of late customer refinements to be incorporated into the design with minimal or no impact
