Extensive remodelling of a busy pharmacy department.

Project

The remodelling of an existing pharmacy, ancillary offices and waiting room in the heart of the hospital to provide retail space and therefore precious revenue for the hospital.

The existing waiting area and office space was remodelled to create a pharmacy and new waiting room, creating retail space for outpatients to buy prescriptions and medicines, we also provided a back room for the pharmacists to process the prescriptions.

Once the new pharmacy was created, we entered the old pharmacy and installed new cabinetry and furniture to improve layout and flow.

Solutions

The pharmacy is sandwiched between two busy patient wards within an operational corridor. We used this corridor to bring in steel and building materials and remove rubbish. One of the pieces of steel was 6m long and weighed 400 kilos, it required a high attention to detail for our team not to nuisance the customer. This was achieved by working out of hours, and evenings and weekends.

We had daily catch ups with the customer about construction activities that may cause issues and we timetabled any clashes out.

Rubbish was removed several times a day in wheelie bins which had lids on so rubbish could not spill out onto the floor. Staff wore overshoes and tacky mats were positioned outside doors, so any debris would stick to the shoes rather than be walked through the ward.

The site team adapted construction methods to keep noise and dust to a minimum, they worked out of hours, created sealed hoardings to the site perimeter and used dust suppression techniques.

We segregated works with fixed melamine hoardings, these were sealed so no dust could get through, and we wiped them down several times a day to keep them clean.
