Extension and refurbishment of a two storey building to provide dance studios.
The demolition of parts of an existing building plus an extension to it; the building was occupied during the works and located in the busy central part of the campus. The ground floor extension provides a new reception area, refectory, offices and a lift. The first floor contains two new dance studios and toilets.
We used solar glass for the curtain walling which reflected the heat and ensured the dance studio would remain cool in the summer, orange glass and copper fins were added as design features.
The plant was relocated to the roof, saving internal space for the customer.
All work was hoarded off to separate students eating their lunch or practising dancing, from the areas we were working on.
Further landscaping works were added to the contract, such as an iron fence, paved entrance and planting this transformed the entrance.
- No storage on site
- The glass for the curtain walling, copper fins and cladding all arrived at the same time
- No work could take place while the floor was being tiled
As there was no storage for any materials on site we had to install the curtain walling, fins and cladding simultaneously, it required three scissor lifts, three cherry pickers and close coordination between all three trades.
We only had two weeks to do this, during this time we still had to maintain access to the front of the building where the trades were working, this made the task more difficult.
The extensive floor had to be retiled, however sections of the floor still had to remain open so other trades could walk on it and carry out their works simultaneously.
“The work Beard carried out on the dance studios is high quality. The new facilities are a great addition to Uxbridge College’s Hayes Campus, benefitting our students with top quality learning spaces, to prepare them for a fantastic future.”
