Beard completes milestone modernisation project for Stroud district

We have completed our 15th modernisation project on independent living schemes housing hundreds of residents for Stroud District Council.

The long-standing partnership has seen us remodel communal spaces, improve facilities and laundry areas, renovate guest accommodation, and upgrade wellbeing areas on 15 sites since the partnership started in 2018.

We’re extremely proud to have completed on this milestone for Stroud District Council and continue our successful partnership. What’s particularly rewarding here is that the scope of work is determined in consultation with residents, from large-scale remodelling down to the colour schemes for the décor, so we know it will directly improve their day-to-day living and be appreciated by them.

Martin Pomroy, Special Projects Manager

Stroud District Council’s modernisation programme comprises work to a total of 26 sites and is scheduled to complete in 2027. The independent living provision is a group of self-contained homes for residents aged 55 and over.

As well as modernising internal spaces, we have delivered external improvements including building secure mobility scooter stores, improving access around sites, and installing external canopies.

Ensuring the health, safety and comfort of our residents is a top priority, particularly as they remain in their homes while improvement works take place. Beard and their subcontractors have shown a consistently thoughtful and professional approach across all sites throughout the programme. Beard has delivered high-quality work, often ahead of schedule, and treated residents’ homes with care and respect.

Ali Fisk, Head of Property Services at Stroud District Council

Committed to communities

Our site teams aimed to keep residents well informed through clear signage, regular updates, and events such as ‘meet the contractor’ sessions and coffee mornings. Teams have also shown kindness and consideration - helping with shopping, assisting with pets, and generally being respectful and courteous.

These projects have also delivered positive social and community impacts. At The Beeches in Kings Stanley, Stonehouse, we donated bird boxes to nearby Great Oldbury Primary School, where they were painted, before being installed around the school’s grounds. Our colleagues also repaired and replanted a planter on the site, in addition to the scope of work.

Apprentices have completed more than 70 work days across all 15 projects, supporting the next generation of construction professionals with practical skills for their careers.

Colleagues also donated a television, sound bar and wall bracket for the residents lounge at Dryleaze, as well as pool tables, dart boards and patio furniture to other settings.

Good quality housing is essential to supporting residents to live well. The regeneration of our Independent Living schemes reflects our commitment as a landlord to provide homes that are safe, energy efficient and fit for the future.

Cllr Lucas Schoemaker, Vice Chair of Stroud District Council’s Housing Committee

Feedback from the council’s residents across sites has been equally positive, with one commenting that the workforce were considerate and helpful, adding: "I’ve never known any contractor so tidy before."

Our special projects division works on projects worth between £300,000 and £2 million in value. It typically includes remodelling, refurbishment and renovation works.

Around fifty percent of the sites being delivered by our Swindon team are under the care of our 40-strong special projects team.
