We were delighted to host a topping out ceremony to mark completion of the first phase of works at Swindon’s Health Hydro in July.
Rather than celebrate at the highest point of the building, we opted for something a little more unusual. A flock of rubber ducks, each signed by key stakeholders, were hidden around the former Washing Bath Hall at the Grade II*-listed building!
As the longest continuously operating Victorian baths in the country, the building needed some attention due to inevitable wear and tear.
Phase one has focused on improving the building’s performance and securing its future – work included upgrading the heating and ventilation plant, repairing roofs, and carrying out major structural works to enable a structure better suited to the 21st century.
The Washing Bath Hall has been opened up to serve as the main entrance and a gym space, with refurbished changing rooms completing the transformation.
It has been a privilege to work on one of the country’s most enduring Victorian baths.
Jamie Harwood, Swindon Director
The ceremony marked the culmination of two years’ work. Throughout the project, we have drawn on our extensive experience of heritage restoration – balancing sensitive conservation with the practical requirements of a modern leisure facility.
With re-opening set for early next year, the Hydro will likely be open for around a year before phase two - which will see work commence on the main pool - begins in 2027.
