Celebrating Women in Construction Week 2025

For Women in Construction Week, we celebrated female colleagues breaking down barriers, driving positive change and making an impact within the industry.

We shone a light on some of the initiatives we’ve launched to support and develop women working at Beard, like the new EmpowerHer programme. Designed to build confidence, encourage skills-sharing, and create a strong community of peers, EmpowerHer offers workshops, one-on-one coaching, and networking opportunities for women across our five regional offices.

Lily Elder, a Quantity Surveyor at our Swindon office, shared how the programme has already made a difference in her career:

I’ve found the course to be a huge confidence boost and extremely inspiring. It’s already created a big impact on how I carry myself in my day-to-day role.

We remain committed to creating pathways for women to enter the industry, and to amplifying female voices at every stage of their careers.

Raeann White, Office Manager in Bristol, also reflected on her experiences of EmpowerHer:

It’s been an eye-opening, empowering journey to date, and I’m excited for the next sessions with a wonderful team of Beard women.

One of the most powerful ways to encourage more women into construction is by sharing the success stories of those already making an impact.

Sekai Mpedzisi from the Oxford office spoke about the importance of representation in the industry.

Inspired by Selling Sunset, Sekai looked for opportunities in construction and is now working as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor at Beard. She emphasized the need for visible role models.

What would young Sekai want to have seen? Someone that looks like her, saying - 'this is what I can do. You can do it too!' How are people supposed to know they're welcome in the industry if you don't show that there's diversity and inclusion there?

Isobel Scanlan, a Quantity Surveying placement student, shared her own perspectives on challenging stereotypes.

Encouraged by her family to consider a career in construction, Isobel is now completing a placement year at Beard and believes that using social media is a key way to reach and inspire young people who might be unsure about what working in construction involves.

Her own assumptions about the industry have changed during her time at Beard:

I think the construction industry is so male-dominated, a lot of women are worried that they’ll be outnumbered. If you get involved in a great company like Beard […] you realise it’s not necessarily like that.

To close out Women in Construction Week, we highlighted the incredible work of our all-female Social Value team (pictured above), who work to create positive change for people, places and planet.

From offering careers advice to young people, to volunteering and charitable giving, the team ensures that each of our projects creates additional, lasting benefits for the communities we serve.

We’re hugely proud of the talented women at Beard, and the work they’re doing to help us deliver excellence in construction.
