Breaking the Mould: Rosy Abrams on Women in Construction Week 2026

To mark Women in Construction Week 2026, we’re sharing the stories of just some of the talented women making waves within Beard.

One of these is Rosy Abrams, Assistant Estimator in our Bristol office. Rosy joined Beard five months ago after pivoting from a career in nursing. Her decision to change direction was not taken lightly, but it’s opened the door to a career she finds incredibly rewarding.

Now working in pre-construction, Rosy plays a key role in the estimating process - engaging with subcontractors and suppliers, validating quotes and helping to ensure projects balance quality and value for money.

As the only female estimator in the Bristol office, she’s keen to “break the mould” and her long-term goal is to progress into quantity surveying.

Rosy is candid about the challenges she has previously faced as a woman in construction.

“Before I started working at Beard, I sometimes felt pigeon-holed by my gender. People have assumed that you must work in admin or on reception. I’ve had to really fight to prove I know what I’m talking about, and that I don’t need to be handled with kid gloves!”

Encouragingly, Rosy has seen attitudes shift over time, with more women visible on site and in leadership roles. She believes that representation is vital when it comes to inspiring the next generation.

“It’s important to say to girls and young women that you can go into what is still a male-dominated industry - and you can excel.”

At Beard, Rosy says she feels valued for her knowledge and ambition:

You’re just seen as someone with the right skills and attitude… not as a man or a woman. There’s always more that employers like Beard can do to boost the number of women in construction, but the culture here is really supportive.

At Beard, Women in Construction Week is a chance for us to reflect on our approach to meaningful inclusivity. Initiatives such as the EmpowerHer programme, a network that supports women in construction through mentoring and skills development, focus on real change rather the tick-box exercises.

Ultimately, Rosy believes that diversity has a positive impact on the entire sector.

“People with different experiences working together… makes the whole project better, the whole industry better.”

We’re committed to making construction a viable and rewarding career path for everyone, regardless of background or gender. Rosy’s story is a reminder that progress comes from perseverance, allyship and visible leadership.

Here’s to the women shaping the future of the industry!
