The construction sector is growing, and an average of 41,200 extra workers will be needed each year between 2026 and 2030, according to the Construction Industry Training Board. *
For new entrants to the sector, there isn’t just one route into a construction career. The range of pathways into the industry presents a wide scope of opportunities, in particular for young people, as well as others at different stages of their careers.
We’re proud to have partnered with Swindon & Wiltshire Careers Hub to showcase different pathways into the industry and produce a new resource called ‘Build your future in construction’. The practical guide is full of insights to help young people, and their parents and carers, understand the opportunities available.
As well as supporting with the development of the guide, three of our colleagues shared their career stories as part of the video series.
Construction trainee Caio Da Silva joined Beard on a college placement and is now completing a Level 4 construction course. “My advice is to make the most out of it. It’s not every day that people are provided these opportunities,” he said. Caio plans to complete further training through a degree apprenticeship to become a site manager.
Lily Elder started out working in procurement before training to be a quantity surveyor. Her focus is on cost management, pricing new jobs and “keeping the project ticking along financially.” Her advice to those unsure about specific career paths is to look for companies that offer rotational roles to help gain an understanding of how the industry works.
Hannah Phillips, social value coordinator, said she never pictured herself working in construction – “but social value incorporated all the things that I enjoyed and had an interest in,” she said. Hannah studied environmental leadership and management at university before joining Beard.
