THE PROJECT
Warmley Park School is a South Gloucestershire maintained special school and college for pupils aged 2-19 with Education, Health and Care plans. Typically the pupils have severe learning difficulties but that includes a range of associated needs including physical, sensory impairment, social communication, and development delay. The school was in need of an enhancement to provide additional pupil places of up to eight pupils aged between 3-6 with seven supporting staff.
The works to the school were an additional extension to the existing nursery building which included, two group rooms, additional toilet provision including hygiene suite, meeting room with kitchenette for staff and storage for wheelchairs. Beard also added a new car parking area for 22 spaces, including EV ducts, CCTV and lighting.

Fully operational school
The school was fully operational, with a shared entrance for pupils and ourselves, this meant clear communication during the pre-start stage of the project was essential to understand the clients requirement. This was communicated to the supply chain at tender stage, pre-let and at all times on site. The site boundary was established with solid hoarding as security, a key message given to us by the client. Delivery plans were also established to avoid any deliveries during drop off and pick up times.
Lack of fire knowledge
There was a lack of fire knowledge on fire regulations from the clients insurer, which brought up some tricky design queries. Beard employed a f ire engineer to provide advice from tender through to handover. Without this consultation being a part of the project team, there would have been significant delays to the project. The fire engineer professionally guided the client to the correct solution.
Contaminated ground
The new extension was to be built on contaminated ground which could of potentially led to high costs to our clients and a delay to the works. Beard carried out early testing to enable a plan to be established. This plan enabled us to highlight areas of contamination and segregate these from inert material. This in fact led to a lower cost as lower areas of removal were required, we were also able to maintain programme due to early engagement.
