Design and build of a new football community centre and pavilion

THE PROJECT

The new 776sq metre, two storey community building contains: offices, changing rooms, club and activity rooms and will be dual split between the community and the football club. The pavilion hosts two balconies and a veranda over-looking the football pitch and 3G artificial turf. The building is constructed using structural steelwork, rendered with a hardi plank and a timber finished façade. The state-of-the-art facility enables the Community Trust and the Swindon Harriers Athletics Club to further expand and enhance the projects and programmes that are enjoyed by thousands of participants. The Trust delivers to a wide range of Swindon people from two to 85 years of age in sessions not solely football focussed, but also tackling issues relating to health, social inclusion, education and sports  participation. This new facility in central Swindon will allow existing and new participants the opportunity to access these projects and programmes, enhancing and benefitting the community’s health and well-being.

We are very pleased with our decision to choose Beard to construct the pavilion and play a big role in creating this flagship sporting facility. We very much looking forward to moving into our fantastic new home and we will be very proud to open the doors to thousands of participants and their families. This new facility will make a huge difference to the community projects and programmes that we deliver.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

  • Meeting the budget: Based upon the original design the customers budget was exceeded and it was critical to bring this back down in order for the project to proceed. Working with the design team the scheme was rationalised in subtle yet significant ways to provide real savings whilst not affecting the end solution.
  • Maintaining relationships: With the site located on an existing playing field there were numerous active interfaces with pedestrians, the football club, athletics club and local residents. To avoid any issues for STFC we maintained a tight site setup with clear boundaries and signage. A banksman was used for all deliveries to avoid any unwelcome interfaces. Clear communications with local residents and stakeholders was also maintained throughout the works.
  • Social value: Central to the scheme was an investment into the community. As part of this we helped by facilitating various tours of the building and seminars to promote the work that was being done.
